Patna, Aug. 25: A member of the Pakistan delegation visiting Bihar today assured of Sarabjeet Singh’s safety and said he is Pakistan’s responsibility until he walks free.
Singh has been languishing in Kot Lakhpat prison in Pakistan’s Punjab province for over two decades. The 21-member parliamentarian delegation today said both the nations were holding talks about the repatriation of their respective citizens who are locked up in each other’s jails.
“Both India and Pakistan are holding serious talks about the issue and the issue of Sarabjeet has been largely discussed. Both the governments want that those locked up for a long time should be repatriated. He (Sarabjeet) will walk free soon,” Mohammed Jahangir Badar, the leader of the delegation and the secretary-general of the Pakistan Peoples Party said.
Singh has been locked up in Pakistan for 20 years now after being nabbed for his alleged involvement in the 1990 bomb blasts in the Punjab province in which 14 people were killed. The Pakistan court had convicted him, giving him the death sentence, which was later turned into life imprisonment by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari. With talks of his release abuzz in June this year, Pakistan later clarified that it was not Sarabjeet but another prisoner named Surjeet who was being freed.
