Dal not in mood for UP front

JDU unlikely to changestand on note ban

The Janata Dal United is unlikely to join hands with the Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh election despite RJD chief Lalu Prasad's recent call for a Bihar-style Grand Alliance there.

The JDU core committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, but a senior functionary revealed on Sunday that the party would not consider Lalu's suggestion as chief minister Nitish Kumar had already made an alliance attempt in the past in vain.

Other major issues the core committee meeting is likely to discuss are the reservation policy, uniform civil code and demonetisation.

The JDU, highly placed sources in the party said, is unlikely to change its stand on the note ban.

"During the core committee meeting, Lalu Prasad's suggestion is not likely to be discussed as our leader has already made up his mind to contest the election joining hands with smaller parties," the senior JDU leader said under cover of anonymity. "Lalu will campaign in support of the Samajwadi Party; he wants us to do the same, which is not possible."

Nitish's attempt at a six-party Janata parivar had failed in Bihar and he had blamed Mulayam Singh Yadav for it.

Lalu recently said he would speak to Nitish for teaming up with the SP in UP.

Lalu's son and deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav had also said Nitish should put differences aside to stop the BJP in UP.

On Sunday, Lalu tweeted: "Have been consistently in talks with Samajwadi Party and Indian National Congress (INC) top leadership. Hoping and doing my best to stitch the Bihar like alliance."

Tejashwi too tweeted: "Glad Lalu ji's efforts paid off in stitching SP and INC alliance in UP for social equality, brotherhood and Akhilesh Yadav's development."

JDU national spokesman K.C. Tyagi said the core committee meeting will decide on the UP strategy.

"The final decision on alliance with any party has not been taken yet but certainly we are in talks with several smaller parties like RJD, NCP and JDS for the UP election. During the core committee meeting, some outcome will come on UP election," he said.

JDU national general secretary Shyam Rajak said the party was focused on strengthening the organisation at the national level.

"On February 11, I am going to Mumbai to hold meeting on how to spread the JDU in Maharashtra," Rajak said. "The party has already nominated Kapil Patil, MLC, as the convener of the Maharashtra unit of the JDU."
