Gaya/Gopalganj, May 28: The JD(U) MLA from Kutumba in Aurangabad district, Lalan Ram, was today sent to jail in a 1997 violence case, a day after the name of his party colleague and Kuchaikot MLA Amarendra Pandey figured in a murder case.

Maoist cadre-turned-politician Lalan’s landing in the jail was as dramatic as his entry into mainstream politics in the 2010 Assembly elections.

A “notorious Maoist cadre” in the police records, Ram suddenly got the JD(U) ticket, hitting the portal of the Assembly in 2010. His entry in the JD(U) had surprised one and all then.

The lawmaker had gone to Aurangabad court to appear in a case related to violence in Kutumba but first-class judicial magistrate A.K. Gupta remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days after finding that the MLA’s bail bond had been terminated long ago.

The details of the case and circumstances were still awaited but sources said the MLA was not aware of the termination of his bail in the 1997 case.

“The court found him absconder in the case and remanded him to custody,” a source said.

Ram has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 323 (causing hurt voluntarily) of the Indian Penal Code.

It is not known what action the JD(U) would take against Ram after his judicial remand. But the party today strongly stood behind Pandey.

“The party will not take disciplinary action against Pandey because he has been falsely framed in the case. Let the law take its course,” said the JD(U) spokesman, Sanjay Singh.

Pandey has been named accused in the murder of Anil Sah, a liquor trader of Hathua in Gopalganj on Saturday evening. Sanjay Pandey, another accused in the case, was arrested today.

Dealing another blow to the image of the JD(U), Chhapra first-class judicial magistrate Sharad Chandra Srivastav today issued a summon to JD(U) MLC Mahachandra Prasad Singh in connection with the murder of one Mantu Singh during parliamentary elections in 2004.

Mantu was shot dead by motorcycle-borne criminals at Nakdiha village under Banipur police station.

Mukhiya (head) of the panchayat Satyendra Singh had lodged an FIR in which Manoranjan Singh alias Dhumal Singh, the JD(U) MLA from Ekma, MLC Mahachandra Prasad Singh and four others were made accused.
