Motihari, Jan. 23: Security has been beefed up in the district headquarters of East Champaran bordering Nepal to thwart any possible terror attack ahead of Republic Day.

About 200 trained guerrillas belonging to various terror groups are reportedly waiting across the frontier to sneak into India and carry out subversive activities in the run-up to January 26, Intelligence reports have alerted.

Deputy inspector-general (Champaran range) Pankaj Kumar Darad today said: “Intelligence agencies have alerted us about possible terror attacks. All police superintendents in Champaran have been directed to tighten security ahead of Republic Day.”

According to the Intelligence reports, the militants are planning to lure unemployed youths from small villages near the border to help the former carry out the subversive activities.

Sources said the guerrillas could enter Champaran, as well as other parts of the country, through Nepal and later divide themselves in small groups to carry out attacks.

A nearly 110-km stretch of the border passing through the district is porous.

There have been instances in the past of militants entering India through the border. Many have, however, been arrested near the border in Champaran in the past few years.

Following directions from the state police headquarters, all station house officers in the district have been asked to take strict security measures.

Sources said Sashastra Seema Bal personnel deployed along the international border have been asked to intensify patrolling and check influx of people allegedly involved in anti-national activities.

Besides, the police force would be strengthened and the number of temporary police pickets increased in the vulnerable areas to keep trouble mongers at bay.

On the other hand, immigration personnel in Raxaul today arrested four foreign nationals, two from China and as many from Tibet, for not carrying valid immigration papers.

They were later handed over to the Raxaul police, said deputy superintendent of police Rajeev Ranjan.

“The four could not produce any valid documents when challenged. After lodging an FIR, they have been sent to judicial custody,” he added.
