Grassroots Congress workers expressed themselves overwhelmingly against the party forging an alliance either with the JD(U) or any other party for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
The Congress high command representatives and secretaries in-charge of party affairs in Bihar, K.L. Sharma and Paresh Dhanani, on Thursday concluded their nine-day Samvad Karyakram.
The two central leaders, believed to be close to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, conducted the consultation programmes at all nine division headquarters of the state.
Sources said the objective behind engaging Sharma and Dhanani was to find a way to revive the party’s strength in the state and gauge the cadres’ mind on the issue of alliance for the 2014 polls.
“The politics of alliance in Bihar has proved to be curse for the Congress in the state. The party struck an alliance with the RJD’s Lalu Prasad when the latter’s graph on the popularity scale was falling fast in the late-1990s. Now, we are getting the message that the Congress is getting close to Nitish when his graph is dipping,” chief spokesperson Premchand Mishra quoted a majority of cadres telling Sharma and Dhanani.
Sources said the two leaders had been instructed by Rahul to listen to grassroots cadres and make a note of their ideas to strengthen the organisation.
The duo instructed cadres to spread the positive impact of the proposed food security bill on the aam aadmi (common man) and the special status that the Centre was likely to offer Bihar in the future.
