Patna, Dec. 24: Plan a smooth drive down the roads of the state capital even before you set out from home.

In two weeks’ time, residents can get regular updates on vehicular movement on capital roads from the traffic police’s new website. CCTV cameras installed at four locations of the city would feed the requisite information to the Patna traffic police.

Launching the website, www.patnatrafficpolice.in, senior superintendent of police Alok Kumar said: “The website will have all kinds of information which daily commuters need, the best being time-to-time updates on the traffic condition on different roads.” On the other hand, people can also call up on 06122219543 for updates or any kind of information on Patna traffic, the SSP added.

“Four CCTVs would be installed at Dakbungalow roundabout, Exhibition Road, Income Tax roundabout and Station Road within two weeks. The cameras would record the traffic movement of a particular street round-the-clock. The website would be updated accordingly. People can make their travel plans after checking the website. The police have also come out with a traffic helpline for the public,” the SSP said.

The website lists traffic rules and regulations, traffic offences and related fines.

“On many occasions, people tend to argue with the police officer about traffic fines imposed on them. The website has a full list of traffic offences in addition to the related penal section and the fine amount, which the public can check out. Most people have got Internet connectivity on their cellphones and can check the website any time. More features would be added in future,” the SSP added.

The traffic burden on the capital roads has been heavy with increasing number of vehicles. Latest figures show 5,36,514 registered two-wheelers in Patna district, 38,876 registered autorickshaws, 1,61,360 registered four-wheelers and 48,139 registered bus, trucks and mini buses.

The senior police officer said Patna residents must emulate those in Calcutta and start using lanes for travel.

“People in Calcutta use a lot of lanes, bylanes and link roads for daily commute. The trend can be emulated in Patna. Many commuters don’t know that using the same would help them reach their destinations on time rather than spending hours stuck in traffic jam on main roads,” the SSP said.
