Muzaffarpur, July 24: Employees of Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (MMC), under the banner of Nagar Nigam Kamgar Union (NNKU), have finally called off the strike, which crippled civic services in the city for 33 days.
The breakthrough was achieved after leaders of the employees on strike held a meeting with mayor Bimla Devi Tulsiyan, deputy mayor Mohammad Nisaruddin and municipal commissioner Arun Kumar Singh.
The leaders decided to call off the strike after being assured that the demands, including the payment of salaries according to the Sixth Pay Commission, would be looked into.
The secretary of NNKU, Rameshwar Rai, the president of the union, Durgeshwar Sharma, and the secretary of the labour union, Laliteshwar Mishra, were present at the meeting.
Tulsiyan told The Telegraph: “The corporation has assured to pay the employees salaries according to the Sixth Pay Commission on condition of a rise in revenue during general assessment of holding taxes. The proposed plan of the general assessment of holding taxes will be completed by the end of October this year. We are hoping that the revenue of the corporation will go up.”
The mayor also said the corporation would be able to pay them the increased salaries according to the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations after the revenue goes up.
Rai said: “The corporation has assured us that we will be paid according to the Sixth Pay Commission scale on the condition that the MMC revenue goes up in the general assessment of holding taxes this year.”
Municipal commissioner Arun Kumar Singh said: “The strike has been called off. The demands of the employees on strike, including withdrawal of the FIRs lodged against the union leaders and suspension of seven employees and the adjustment of the strike period with their leaves, will be considered with a sympathetic view in the days to come.”
Meanwhile, soon after the withdrawal of the strike was announced, the civic employees swung into action to remove the garbage from various corners of the city.
The employees also started the work of cleaning up the drains that were choked for the past several days.
The employees also restored the water supply in Chandwara, Naya Tola, Barhampura, Maripur, Gannipur, Sikandarpur and other areas.
