Come August 10, Delhi Public School, Patna, will resemble a scene out of the Hollywood science fiction film I, Robot.

Takshila Educational Society will conduct Robofest 2016, a two-day annual robotic event at DPS, Patna. This is the first time that Takshila Educational Society would organise such an event in Patna.

Around 10 institutions, including St Michael's High School, GD Goenka Public School, Notre Dame Academy, Open Minds - A Birla School, DY Patil Pushpalata Patil International School and The Tribhuvan School, have registered for the competition.

Sanjiv Kumar, secretary of Takshila Educational Society and pro-vice-chairman of Delhi Public School, Patna, Pune, Ludhiana and Coimbatore, said the fest will teach the students to build robots and solve a challenge employing concepts of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science.

"We started a robotics lab in DPS-Patna last year and robotics studies is becoming popular among kids. The inter-school competition-cum-workshop will help students understand the basics of robotics while learning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing theories," he said.

Only one team is allowed from a school and each team should include three students from classes VI to VIII. The competition-cum-workshop is being supported by RoboGenius Academy, Delhi.

Sandeep Verma, robotics in-charge at DPS-Patna, said: "The students will work on Lego Mindstorms series of kits which contain software and hardware to create customisable and programmable robots."

He added that two robotic expert teams from Delhi have been invited.

"The competition will help students build computer-programmed robots to act independently. It will encourage them to master the principles of science, technology, engineering and mathemat-ics by focusing on compu-ter programming," he explained.

The Lego Mindstorms series of kits include an intelligent brick computer that controls the system, a set of modular sensors and motors, and Lego parts from the Technic line to create the mechanical systems.

Shreejit, a Class VI student of Open Minds - A Birla School, said: "I would love to take part in this fest. I want to experiments with three different ultrasonic sensors - original NXT sensor, EV3 sensor, and mind sensors in various situations and environments. Apart from robotic studies, I have even taught at school to make useful things with waste products. That skill will help us in this competition."

"The fest will give us a platform to share our ideas and innovations while learning from experts. I want to be a robotics engineer and for this, I have to prepare myself from the school-level," said Harsh Singh, a Class VIII student of GD Goenka Public School.
