Students of Patna Women’s College had mixed feelings on Friday.

The science department of the institute inaugurated its central research laboratory to a huge round of applause, while copious tears were shed on principal Sister Doris D’ Souza’s last day at college.

The guest of honour was S.M. Karim, director, higher education, while the chief guest was Pradeep Das, director, Rajendra Memorial Research Institute, at the silver jubilee of the science department.

Shahla Yasmin, head of department, zoology, talked about equipment and instruments of the new lab. She said: “It’s an honour for our college to bring in specialised equipment to provide students a better standard of education.”

Microscopes with digital camera, electrophoresis unit, blood chemistry analyser, digital picoammeter and other equipment have been brought in.

Sister Doris said: “I gratefully thank the University Grants Commission (UGC) for all the financial support and the state government to establish this central research laboratory. May scientific research culture prevail in this institute and help students to excel in studies.”

“Our college has done commendable work on every aspect of education. Today is a very special day not only for the institute but also for students. The devices would make theoretical knowledge more interesting. Research means to find out the hidden truth,” said Karim.

Pradeep congratulated the tireless effort of the principal and faculty members and urged students to utilise the instruments for research. He said: “Whatever you are learning, it will go a long way. With the help of these devices, the students can excel in the field of research.”

On the occasion, students performed a farewell song, skit and dance for Sister Doris. She was gifted with a bouquet, a shawl and a memento as a token of gratitude.

Sister Doris said: “I thank all faculty members, employees and students for their love and unconditional support. I gave my best each day. Development, innovation and good governance mean hard policies, quick decisions and effective execution. It’s true that we need a role model. I remember the contributions of the past principals and the founder and co-founder. I salute them all.”
