Patna, Nov. 1: Suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Enul alias Tarique succumbed to his injuries in the small hours today, taking the total toll of the October 27 serial blasts to seven.
Enul, a resident of Sithio village under the jurisdiction of Dhurwa police station in Ranchi, died at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) around 1.10am today. He had sustained grievous head injuries when a bomb he was carrying went off in a public lavatory at the Karbighaiya-end of Patna Junction on Sunday.
Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel immediately rushed Enul (25) to IGIMS. “He was put on the life support system. He passed away around 1.10am on Friday,” said city superintendent of police (SP) Jayant Kant.
He said Enul’s dying declaration had been recorded. The officer did not divulge whether the suspected Indian Mujahideen operative had confessed to his crime or not.
Kant said Enul was one of the six persons named as accused in the FIR lodged with the Gandhi Maidan police station in connection with the serial explosions in the city on Sunday.
IGIMS director Arun Kumar confirmed the death of Enul. “His condition was critical. The chances of his survival were thin,” he said, adding that nobody had turned up at the hospital to claim his body.
Doctors attending to Enul at IGIMS said his condition was very serious because of skull injuries. “Most of the brain matter had oozed out from the skull. The brain matter was put inside and the skull was stitched. But a surgery could not be conducted on him because he was unconscious,” one among them said.
He said: “Unconscious patients cannot be put on anaesthesia. Hence, they can’t be operated upon.”
Dr S.K. Jha of the general surgery department of IGIMS said Enul had fractures in the right hand and a portion of its skin had peeled off. He also had burn injuries in his right leg, the doctor said.
According to Dr Jha, Enul’s hand needed surgery but it could not be done because of his health condition. “We were waiting for him to regain consciousness,” said Dr K.M. Jha, a neurosurgeon at IGIMS.
Some telephone numbers recovered from Enul helped the police arrest Tabish Neyaz alias Arshad Ansari from East Champaran district on Tuesday. Judicial magistrate Prabal Dutta today directed the Beur Central Jail superintendent, Shivendra Priyadarshi, to hand him over to the Patna police for interrogation.
