Patna, May 28: Twenty-three-year-old Chandan Kumar Choudhary, the son of a postmaster posted at Govindpur Dholi post office in Muzaffarpur district, has been missing in Bengal for almost a month and the family members are in trauma ever since.

Today, the family got an opportunity to meet chief minister Nitish Kumar when he reached the JD (U) party office. A wailing Renu Devi, Chandan’s mother, fell down at his feet, caught his leg and pleaded for tracing her son in Bengal. “Sir, please help us, my son has been missing for the past one month. We fear that he has been kidnapped or something unusual has happened to him. We have been running here and there but nothing has happened so far. We have lost all hope, kindly do this favour.”

Nitish spoke to the family members for while, checked Chandan’s photograph and said: “Try to be calm, nothing will happen to your son. I will speak to the Bengal government on the matter and all kind of possible help will be extended to trace your son. Just don’t lose your patience and everything will be fine.”

Chandan is a student of third year BTech (dairy technology), West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences at Mohanpur in Nadia district.

Renu said: “My son is missing since April 30 night. He set out for Patna from the hostel around 5pm. He was supposed to appear for a bank recruitment examination. He called me up at 10pm to say that he had reached Burdwan railway station and would catch a train for Patna but the next day when my husband tried to contact him, his mobile number was switched off. Since then we have not got any information about him. His father is in Nadia only and trying to find him. We suspect that Chandan’s friends kidnapped him.”

On the possibility of abduction, his grandfather, Bindeshwar Kumar Choudhary, said: “He was not coming to Patna alone. Two of his friends, Santosh Kumar and Arun Kumar from Munger and Jamui districts respectively were also accompanying him. They must have kidnapped him. However, we have not received any ransom call from anyone.”

The Telegraph spoke to Bihar director-general of police (DGP) Neelmani regarding the alleged kidnapping. He said: “Yes, I have received directions from the chief minister and after that I spoke to the DGP of Bengal, Naparajit Mukherjee and the superintendent of police of Nadia Champak Bhattacharya on this issue. We are in constant touch with each other. I told them that if they want any help from Bihar police, we are ready to provide that. Investigation is in process.”
