New Delhi: The Opposition led by two MPs from Bihar, Ranjit Ranjan and Jayprakash Narayan Yadav, created uproar in the Lok Sabha on Monday, demanding justice for victims of the Muzaffarpur shelter home rapes case and demanded a response from the government alleging evidence in the case were being destroyed.
After raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan went near the Speaker's chair and snatched papers and banged the table, demanding a response from home minister Rajnath Singh, who was present in the House.
The Speaker sought to reject the demand pointing out the CBI has already been asked to probe the case and the home minister can't be expected to respond every time. Ruckus by Ranjan and protest over the issue by others forced the Speaker to adjourn the House for some time. The Opposition, comprising Congress, RJD and the Trinamul Congress, later staged a walkout from the House in protest.
Raising the issue, Ranjit Ranjan said one of the main witnesses in the case had fled and efforts were on to destroy evidence. "We passed the criminal law bill, but what if the evidence are destroyed?" she asked.
She claimed that many of the girls who were raped were shifted out of the Muzaffarpur shelter and now they were missing. She asked why 14 other shelter homes run by the same organisation were not being probed.
The RJD's Jayprakash Narayan Yadav alleged the girls were being pressured to change their statements and demanded that they should be brought to Delhi and provided full security. He also demanded that the court should monitor the probe in the case, alleging evidences were being destroyed.
The Congress, Left and the Trinamul rose in support of the demand raised by the two MPs. Both the MPs demanded that the home minister should make a statement on the issue. Rajnath appeared reluctant.
Ranjit Ranjan walked into the Well, went near the Speaker's chair and banged the table to demand a response from the government.
When the House reassembled after a brief adjournment, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan urged the government to take the investigation in the case "very seriously" and look into every aspect.
Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar assured the members the CBI probe would be carried out "impartially" and added that the issues raised by the Opposition members would brought to the notice of the home minister. Even as he was responding, the Opposition members walked out in protest.
