Ex-MLA 'kills' minor

Patna: Hazra Khatoon, a teenaged girl, was killed and four children suffered bullet injuries when former MLA Suryadev Singh and his associate allegedly opened fire at them in Rohtas district's Tenduni village on Sunday. Singh has been arrested. Police said Singh opened fire over a land dispute.

The injured - Diwakar (8), Prakash (12), Sahil (4) and Guddu (5) - have been admitted to a Sasaram hospital where the condition of two is critical.

Education

Sheikhpura (PTI): Education minister Ashok Choudhary on Sunday admitted that the standard of education in Bihar's government schools was "not good". "Students of Class V in government schools cannot solve mathematics problem of Class III," he said, while inaugurating an inter-district cricket tournament at the Barbigha College ground, around 15km from the Sheikhpura district headquarters. The minister was referring to a report prepared by an NGO that had carried out a massive survey at the grassroots level about the low quality of education at government schools.

Suspension

Darbhanga: Laheriasarai police station house officer D.N. Mandal has been suspended for alleged laxity in the case of a woman being burnt alive in the town on March 25. Departmental proceedings have been initiated.

Cop injured

Gopalganj: Sub-inspector B.K. Singh received serious injuries when a mob attacked a police team that had gone to raid Rupanchak Bheju Tola village in the district late on Saturday night. The mob freed two accused from police custody. The cop has been admitted to the sadar hospital.

Doctor protest in July

Patna, April 2: Doctors associated with the state chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will join the national protest to be organised in New Delhi during the monsoon session of Parliament in July.

Senior vice-president of Bihar IMA, Ajay Kumar, said the doctors have joined hands against the rising violence against the fraternity across the country. Contract Doctors Association general secretary Abhishek Sinha said his association members would join the protest too.

House scheme

Patna: BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav on Sunday said the state government was not properly implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. He claimed Bihar was not providing beneficiaries the utility certificates.

Polio fight

Patna: Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, the Patna district magistrate, on Sunday conducted a review meeting for the pulse polio campaign. He said the campaign will be conducted for five days, and for the first time Jeevika workers will be involved in the drive. Disciplinary action will be taken against officials who do not comply with the orders.

Tap water

Patna: Phulwarisharif MLA Shyam Rajak and urban development and housing department's principal secretary Chaitanya Prasad on Sunday inspected the Assembly constituency to check if tap water was available in every household. This is one of the seven resolves announced by chief minister Nitish Kumar.
