A bomb squad member checks an abandoned bag in the Buddha Marg area on Friday. Around 1.40pm, people in the area noticed the bag near the boundary wall of a company's office. A journalist with a vernacular daily called up Kotwali police station house officer (SHO) Avinash Kumar Yadav to seek help. "However, he didn't take any interest and said if you have found the bag, you only throw it away," the scribe told The Telegraph. "After the officer disconnected the phone, I had no choice but to call up the Patna zonal IG."Yadav then received a call from senior officers following which a team of the Kotwali police, along with Yadav, rushed to the spot. The area was cordoned off and the bomb squad called in. The bag, it was found, was filled with CDs. Patna zonal inspector-general (IG) of police N.H. Khan has instructed the Patna SP (central) to probe the incident and submit a report, after which action will be initiated against the SHO. Yadav, who has recently been posted at the Kotwali police station, denied allegations that he neglected his duty. "How can I just say that I will not go? Sometimes, during informal chats, people can say a lot of things. But my intention was never wrong. The police acted immediately. There was no bomb in the bag," he said. IG Khan said the matter has been taken up seriously. "The police cannot be complacent like this," he said.Text by Joy Sengupta, picture by Ashok Sinha
