A girl from Patna has proved that financial constraints cannot impede someone’s strive for excellence.

Namrata Jaiswal, who is currently pursing chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, has received final calls from Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) based on her Common Admission Test (CAT) score. Her father, who owns a small medicine shop, feels it is only her hard work that has paid off.

Speaking to The Telegraph from Mumbai, Namrata said: “I want to do something for the state. After completing my MBA from IIM, I want to do something for Bihar in the education sector.”

The 22-year-old gave all credit to her parents and to her mentor, Super30 founder Anand Kumar, for her latest feat. Jaiswal already has a job offer from Singapore-based Finmechanics, which has offered her an annual package of Rs 12 lakh. However, the Notre Dame Academy alumnus has set her eyes on an IIM for higher studies at present.

Hailing from a middle-class family, Namrata’s father Pramod Kumar Jaiswal runs a medicine shop at Govind Mitra Road in Patna.

“For a person who has a limited source of income, it is a dream come true that his daughter has scaled this height. All credit goes to my daughter, who has put in such labour and also her mentor (Anand Kumar). His Super30 helped her crack the IIT-JEE in 2009 and thereafter she went onto score 98.9 percentile in this year’s CAT,” said Pramod, a father of two. The CAT results were declared in April.

He added: “My economic condition was not sound to teach two daughters in the IITs, which charge more than Rs 4 lakh per student. However, my elder daughter (Namrata) had taken a lot of burden off my shoulder after she qualified for a national merit-cum-poverty scholarship amounting to Rs 30,000 per IIT semester under a central government scheme.”

Pramod’s younger daughter, Tanya Jaiswal, is also pursuing chemical engineering from IIT-Bombay. Pramod, a graduate from Patna Science College, said: “Despite our economic constraints, we have always given weightage to education. This is the reason why both my daughters are IITians.”

It was because of this focus of her parents that Namrata cleared the IIT-JEE in her first attempt. Throughout a brilliant student, Namrata had scored 94 per cent in her Class XII boards and 95 per cent in Class X.

Her mentor Anand Kumar, who was visibly happy with Namrata’s accomplishment, said the girl and her father approached him in 2007 to help her crack the IIT-JEE. “Namrata’s father told me about their financial problem. The father urged me to guide Namrata so that she could crack the IIT-JEE,” said Anand Kumar. Namrata, after studying at the mathematician’s Ramanujan School of Mathematics for a year, was enrolled at the Super30 in 2008. she made it to IIT-Bombay in 2009 with an all India rank of 324.
