Patna, June 9: Two probationary sub-inspectors are in the eye of the storm for allegedly beating up a park security guard.

The incident took place at the entrance of Sri Krishna Puri Park under SK Puri police station on Wednesday. However, it came to light only today with Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Alok Kumar ordering a probe into the incident.

Two probationary sub-inspectors (PSIs) posted at Rajiv Nagar police station — Kumarendra and Rajiv — are under the glare for “unruly behaviour”. The victim, 33-year-old Sanjay Kumar, said on Tuesday evening, Kumarendra and Rajiv, along with another PSI from SK Puri police station, had come to the park on two motorcycles. As the park is under renovation for the past few days, nobody is being allowed to enter it.

“The park is undergoing renovation. It was closed from June 5 to June 11. A notice announcing the same was put up at the gate. We had been directed not to allow anyone inside the park,” said Sanjay.

He added: “I did not recognise the two as they were wearing civil clothes. I allowed the third PSI, who was in uniform. When the other two tried to enter, I stopped them stating that the park was under renovation. The two got angry and started to abuse me. They warned me that they would return the next day and I should be ready to face the consequences of stopping them.” The three turned up yesterday, as promised, at around 2pm, all in their uniforms.

“The two men called me and started abusing me again. They said I was trying to act smart the day before and started slapping me. My mouth started to bleed. They also tore off the notice on the gate before leaving on their bikes,” Sanjay said. SSP Alok Kumar said: “Deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Lalit Sharma has been asked to look into the matter, make investigations and forward a report on the incident.”

City superintendent of police Shivdeep Lande said: “A detailed probe will be conducted into the incident and strict action will be initiated if the PSIs are found guilty.”

At present, there are 300 PSIs in Patna, posted on different duties. Once their probation period is over, they will be made sub-inspectors and posted at different police stations. Sources said the PSIs, who are mostly youngsters, are becoming a nuisance.

“It is a strange situation, especially in Patna. There has not been a single incident where a PSI has cracked a case. They cannot even write a case diary or a station diary properly. There have been complaints against them. They don’t wear their uniforms properly or salute their seniors. In Patna, a majority of them have been posted in their hometown and they just act like super cops. The matter needs to be looked into strictly,” a police officer said.
