Canada-based doctor and psychiatrist of Indian origin Biju Mathew is writing a biography of mathematician and Super 30 founder Anand Kumar, publishers Penguin Books and Random House announced at the World Book Fair in Delhi on January 14.

The roughly 250-page-book, divided into six chapters, will hit bookstores in May. Super 30: The Magic of Anand Kumar will highlight Anand's early life, his struggle and how he emerged as a youth icon.

"The book will also highlight the success story of Super 30," Anand said. "I am glad that Mathew is writing my biography." The Super 30 coaching institute selects 30 talented students from the economically backward sections of society and grooms them to crack one of the world's most demanding entrance tests - to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Recalling his first meeting with Mathew, Anand said he was felicitated at a function organised by the South Asian Cultural Society in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2012 for his work.

"Mathew was impressed with my work towards society and my speech, he said he was interested to write a story on my life," Anand said. "He did a lot of research and came to Patna twice and spent more than two weeks. He visited my native place, Beobaha village, my old school and met many of my friends, relatives and students. He travelled from Patna to Calcutta to get a feel of my father's journey as a railway mail service employee."

Anand added: "Mathew also visited Varanasi to see the Central Library to know how I spent my time there. No one can do research like Mathew. His endeavour and zeal really deserve applause. He has written a lot of stories of people with mental problems and has in-depth knowledge."

Canadian journalist Robert Prince is editing the book.

"I came to know about Anand Kumar through newspapers and invited him to Canada for a lecture," Mathew said. "His story and words were so encouraging that I decided to write a story on his life. I was influenced by his dedication and craving to help backward section students."

The book, he said, "will narrate how Anand started his career and the commendable way he dedicated himself to the society."

He was never swept away by name and fame. The book will motivate the youth to find the way towards their goal even in the darkest hour. Anand is a guiding light for many students, especially the underprivileged."
