AIIMS starts craniofacial surgeries

The dentistry department of AIIMS-Patna has started craniofacial surgeries and so far the department doctors have conducted 15 such surgeries in collaboration with the doctors of other departments of the hospital.

Patna: The dentistry department of AIIMS-Patna has started craniofacial surgeries and so far the department doctors have conducted 15 such surgeries in collaboration with the doctors of other departments of the hospital.

A 45-year-old woman from Danapur who had jaw disfigurement due to trauma and a four-year-old girl from Patna who had jaw deformity since birth were recently operated upon by the doctors at AIIMS, Patna. Both patients had problem in talking and eating and now their deformities have been corrected. All thanks to the craniofacial surgery done by the doctors of the institute.

Craniofacial surgery deals with the disfigurement of eye, facial disfigurement (facial bones all distorted due to which the face looks asymmetrical), jaw bone attached to teeth (ankylosis), abnormal shape of the head, shortening of the lower jaw bone, depressed cheek bones, deformities of the forehead among others.
