Patna, Sept. 25: The Ganga Bridge police of Hajipur district have lodged an FIR against Adarsh Kumar and his family, who had allegedly pushed Amrita Singh, Adarsh’s “wife”, into the Ganga from the Mahatma Gandhi Setu on September 22.
Amrita, however, managed to stay alive after apparently swimming for nearly 12 hours before she could be rescued.
A case of attempt to murder has been lodged against Adarsh, his mother Reeta Devi and three sisters. All of them are absconding.
Sources said since Amrita, who has a three-month-old child, was thrown from the bridge between pillar number 38 and 40 under Alamganj police station of Patna, a tussle has started between the Alamganj and the Ganga Bridge police stations of Hajipur in Vaishali district regarding the FIR.
“There was a tussle since both the police stations were pointing fingers at each other regarding the site of occurrence of the crime. Now, an FIR has been lodged at the Ganga Bridge police station and investigations have been started,” a police officer said.
The officer said Amrita didn’t have any legal document to prove her marriage with Adarsh.
“Adarsh works at a call centre in Amritsar where he had met Amrita and both fell in love. According to her statement, they got married in a temple there and she doesn’t have any document to prove the marriage. They were in a live-in relationship and she trusted him completely. That’s where she had faltered,” the officer added.
Police said Adarsh had offered her money and asked Amrita to leave him a few days before committing the crime.
Sources said Adarsh, meanwhile, was planning to get rid of her.
“On September 22 night, Adarsh, his distant uncle and two other friends took Amrita in a car convincing her that she will be meeting Adarsh’s family members. On the way, she was given a cold drink laced with drug after which she started to feel dizzy. Then the men asked her to come out of the car to get fresh air. At that time they were on the setu. They then pushed her into the river,” the officer said.
