Karachi, June 23: Thousands of fans, supporters and friends today attended the funeral prayers of singer Amjad Sabri, who was shot dead in Karachi yesterday.
His body was taken to Paposhnagar, where he was laid to rest next to his father, qawwali maestro Ghulam Farid Sabri.
Private TV channels broadcast live scenes of Sabri's funeral as tearful mourners showered rose petals over an ambulance carrying the coffin of the singer to his home.
Police today remained clueless about the murder, with no arrests made or raids carried out in the city until late this afternoon.
A wave of grief and shock gripped the country yesterday when armed motorcyclists sprayed Sabri with bullets in broad daylight in the Liaquatabad area of Karachi. The 45-year-old singer was heading to a private TV channel to perform in its Ramazan transmission.
Karachi's Dawn newspaper quoted Sabri's brother as saying today that the singer had not received any death threats.
"He was a pious man.... he never thought about (threats to his life)," Sarwat Sabri told the media.
Media reports had earlier quoted a Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader as saying that Amjad Sabri had received threats to his life.
Sarwat Sabri called on the chief of army staff, General Raheel Sharif, to bring the killers of his brother to book.
He said Sabri's death was a major loss to the world of qawwali but "it is an art form the door of which can never be shut".
An FIR report is yet to be registered. Paramilitary personnel visited the Sabri home today and collected evidence and the singer's cellphone to examine call records.
Abida Parveen, known all over the world for her mystic songs, said: "Amjad Sabri was a living legend and there cannot ever be another Amjad."
"I was on very good terms with his father Ghulam Farid Sabri and his uncle Maqbool Sabri. The brothers, who earlier had a rift, put an end to the misunderstanding with the most beautiful qawwali, Mann Kunto Maula, which invoked spirituality in people," Parveen said.
Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam asked: "How can someone kill a person as innocent as Amjad Sabri? First of all, I want to offer my condolences to the Pakistani nation and the music fraternity over the loss of Amjad Sabri."
He added: "How can one justify the killing of a person as innocent as Amjad Sabri in the name of religion?"
