A woman and two minor girls died when they jumped off a railway bridge apparently to escape from a moving goods train at Sahudangi near here on Thursday afternoon.

Officers of New Jalpaiguri police station and the Government Railway Police of the NJP found the bodies lying in a stream called Sahu. The bodies have been seized and the police are trying to identify them.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman and the girls were crossing the railway bridge. As a goods train approached the bridge, we suspect, they panicked and jumped from the bridge. They fell into the stream and died,” said a police source.

The investigators are yet to identify the deceased trio and suspect they were rag-pickers.

Bangladeshis arrested

The Border Security Force on Tuesday apprehended two Bangladeshis who were allegedly trying to infiltrate into India through the border in Cooch Behar district.

The duo were nabbed by the 148 battalion of the BSF.

The two were Aminur Islam and his wife Amina Akhtar, both residents of Maymensingh district of the neighbouring country. They have been handed over to Mekhliganj police station.

The BSF carried out a drive against smuggling in the past few days at different locations along the Bangladesh border in north Bengal and seized cattle, cough syrup and narcotics.

The cost of the seized items is around Rs 2.72 lakh, sources said.
