Police chief Ranjit Pachnanda on Thursday held a pre-poll briefing for senior officers, asking them to be impartial and ensure there was no violation of the model code of conduct.
Pachnanda referred to the instruction manual distributed to the officers, which he said must be consulted if there was any confusion.
“All of you have been briefed about the model code of conduct. Besides, it’s also there in a booklet provided to you. So there should not be any excuse (for a lapse),” Pachnanda told his officers. The city goes to the polls on April 27.
Sources said the meeting was aimed at driving home the message that all officers were now under the poll panel’s control.
Additional police pickets will be posted at the 355 polling booths in the city that have been identified as “super-sensitive”. From Friday, the central paramilitary forces would start “route march” in all six police divisions.
“Officers from the local police stations will accompany the central forces on the march, which will continue from 7am to 11pm in phases,” said an officer.
The officers were also briefed about the alternative documents a voter can produce in the booth if he didn’t have the poll panel’s identity card. They are passport; driving licence; PAN card; passbook with photograph issued by a public sector bank; service identity card issued by state/central government, undertaking or local body; freedom fighter’s identity card and arms licence with photograph issued on or before February 28.
