The art of Sanatan Saha is seldom pre-meditated. It grows in his mind while he busies himself splashing paint on canvases that resonate with his developing thoughts. Though he grew up in an environment far from urban influences, the surprising element in his art is the way in which his complex image-making characterises his art with a cutting-age urbanity. Saha explores life in rural and urban settings always in the same canvas. Thus emerged Complexcity, the ongoing series of paintings by the young artist. A mosaic of broken surfaces, twisted branches and suggestive foliage, geometric division of paint surface and permutation of organic forms, animated vegetation and surreal quadrupeds, snails and insects, birds and bees, appear in his canvases with a subdued presence and in varying measures to help him create an imaginative mindscape of rural life. His present series, in essence, skillfully portrays unsung songs in line and colour that are visually elegant yet intensely cerebral.
