An eye for cinema
Besides influencing his country’s cinema in one of its most interesting phases, German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus also made a significant impact on Hollywood film aesthetics. His name is inseparable from the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorcese. Michael Ballhaus — The Roving Eye, the ongoing retrospective of his works, features nine films from his German phase (1970-1980). To be screened today are The Station Master’s Wife (dir: Rainer Werner Fassbinder; at 4.30 pm) and The Marriage of Maria Braun (dir: Rainer Werner Fassbinder; at 6.30 pm). Ballhaus’s last as Fassbinder’s cameraman, the latter film (a still from it appears above) contains one of the best screenplays written from the director’s own outline.
