Of tradition and trend
Being held on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of Birla Academy of Art and Culture, the ongoing art exhibition brings together the creations of around 500 artists from all over India. Featuring works by well-known artists as well as young talents in the field of the visual arts, it endeavours to highlight emerging trends in the contemporary art world, at the same time paying tribute to enduring artistic traditions that have defied the passage of time. Comprising 134 paintings, 45 graphics and 55 sculptures, the show features works in a variety of styles raning from realistic and expressionist to abstract and even surreal. Revealing originality and sensitivity in the modern context in their themes, they provide an insight into the ideas, instincts and inner compulsions dominating the minds of their creators. Participating artists include Swapan Kumar Mallick, Dilip Kumar Samanta, Ajoy Kumar Bandopadhyay, Gauranga Bariki, Suvendu Biswas, Jayanta Naskar, Paresh Maity, Amit Sarkar (Tal; picture above), Subrata Pal, K. Muralidharan, Hardeep Singh, Anasuya Prodhan, Partha Pratim Deb and Ramu Das.

PERFORMING ARTS

January 17 at Birla Academy; 5.30 pm: Spirit of Indian Classical Music presents vocal recital by Amit Mukherjee and a sarod recital by George Ruckert. January 17 at G.D. Birla Sabhagar; 6.30 pm: The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India presents an evening od classical dance and music featuring Anjana Banerji (Bharata Natyam) and Bikram Ghosh (tabla) including a jugalbandi.

SYMPOSIUM

January 17 at Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Vivekananda Hall; 5.30 pm: Symposium on Life and Teachings of Holy Mother Sri Sri Sarada Devi, in English, Bengali and Hindi. Opening song: Swami Ritananda. Participants: Swami Vishwamayananda, Swami Jnanavratananda, Swami Chidrupananda, Swami Pararupananda and Swami Vimohananda. President: Swami Prabhananda.

EXHIBITIon

January 17 at Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, 19A Gurusaday Road; 3 pm: Inauguration of the 31st Eastern India Science Fair and Engineering Fair 2006, The fair will be held till January 21 between 10 am and 5 pm. January 17 at Oxford Bookstore; 4.30 pm: Oxford Bookstore and Save the Children UK present Creative Comics for Change, an exhibition of comics created by children on HIV/AIDS through a three-day workshop facilitated by Sharad Sharma. Till January 17 at Sen Bati, 3 Mandeville Gardens; 12 noon - 8 pm: Garvi/ Gurjari Calcutta hosts an exhibition-cum-sale along with live demonstration by renowned artisans from Gujarat.
