100 years of Hollywood

The Telegraph Online Published 13.09.10, 12:00 AM
100 years of Hollywood
A hundred years ago, D. W. Griffith made the first-ever Hollywood movie. It was called In Old California. The 17-minute silent movie, an adventure set in Spanish colonial days, was an overnight success. Griffith discovered Hollywood on his trips to sunny California and loved the stunning scenery and friendly people. But little did he know what he was starting! By the late 1910s, Hollywood became synonymous with cinema and its burgeoning glamour. To celebrate 100 years of Hollywood, Tasveer, Magnum and The Seagull Foundation for the Arts, in association with Ganjam, present At the Movies — Magnum ke Tasveer, showcasing rare photographs of yesteryear stars Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and others photographed by some of the world’s finest photographers including Robert Capa, Dennis Stock, Eve Arnold, Phillipe Halsman, Burt Glinn, Martine Franck, Erich Hartmann, David Hurn and Marc Riboud.
