Figurative creations Art of the 21st century has been characterised by an uncertainty regarding its form and content. New generation artists employ strategies of image making like video art and other techno-based forms that were virtually unknown to earlier generations. Gen Next III, the ongoing group show of art works by 40 artists from all over the world, marks the culmination of a continued attempt to showcase innovative works by promising talents. The exhibition is remarkable for its abundance of figurative works. Ranging from realistic imagery of digital sharpness to free-form figures, figurative art definitely dominates the show. Symbolic motifs are evoked by digital manipulation and placed on a pictorial space of no specific semantic dimensions. In some works, there are references to photography, pre-modern art, miniature painting and ad visuals that offer a clue to the significance of the compositions. POETRY READING/CONTEST

October 17 at British Council; 7 pm: British Council India, in association with Westland Ltd, is organising an evening of poetry reading by British Asian poet Daljit Nagra,who will also perform from Look We Have Coming to Dover. On the occasion, British Council is holding The Man Who Would Be English! — a contest for young poets in Hinglish or Benglish. It is inspired, as is the title, from Forward Prize winner Nagra’s collection of poetry, Look We Have Coming to Dover. Daljit’s unique Pung-lish sensibility is the springboard for this contest: (1) The poems must be no longer than 25 lines; (2) They should be an original work in Hinglish or Benglish; and (3) Winners will be announced and awarded on the evening of October 17 by Nagra himself.
