Sources said Kar, who was from Cooch Behar, had joined Indong tea estate in Matialli block of Jalpaiguri as recently as on January 21.

In recent years, this is the first unnatural death of a doctor from the tea belt.

“This morning (Thursday), some workers spotted his body in Gudam Nadi, a stream that skirts workers’ quarters. We immediately rushed to the spot and called up police. We have no inkling why he had been to the stream,” said Rajat Deb, the garden manager.

Polie sent the body to Jalpaiguri district hospital for post-mortem. A policeman said it was likely that the doctor slipped and fell into the stream, but the post mortem report would shed more light.
