Jan. 17: Subhra Ghosh nee Datta, 84, widow of the late Bengal cabinet minister, Tarun Kanti Ghosh, passed away in south Calcutta on January 7. She had been suffering from a lung problem.
Coming as a young bride into the Ghosh clan with its newspaper business, she spent a considerable period of her early life at Bagbazar in north Calcutta, the seat of her in-laws. Later, she went to live in Barasat, on the northern fringe of the city, when her family relocated there.
Though widely travelled within and outside the country, Ghosh had a deep attachment to her native place, Calcutta, which she missed in whichever part of the world she happened to be. A natural singer herself, she was a keen follower of the city's entertainment world.
As one of the last of the Ghosh matriarchs, she was sociable, caring and popular in her circles and beyond. She leaves behind several generations of her family and numerous admirers.
