A student of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College was found dead in his rented room on Thursday morning in Khardah.

Subhadeep Das, 18, a first-year chemistry honours student at the Khardah institution, was a resident of Gaighata in North 24-Parganas.

He was staying as a paying guest in a ground-floor room of a two-storeyed building in Dangapara, about 20km from college, with classmates Arnab Chini and Sanjay Das.

“A murder case has been initiated against the roommates following a complaint by the victim’s father,” said Ananda Roy, assistant commissioner of police, Barrackpore. “The complainant alleged that his son was poisoned.”

Chini and Das told the police they found Subhadeep unconscious on the floor at 7am and frothing at the mouth. “He fell from the bed through the mosquito net,” an officer quoted one of the roommates as saying. The duo and the owner of the building took Subhadeep to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Hospital sources said the boy died because of a cerebral attack followed by cardiac arrest. He had also suffered head injuries, which, according to the hospital, were the result of a fall from a height.

CU student

A second-year Bengali MA student of Calcutta University, Ardendhu Sekhar Neye, was found hanging in his hostel room on Nirmal Chunder Street on Wednesday. His friends found him hanging from the ceiling fan around 8.45pm.

Police said Neye, a resident of Gosaba in South 24-Parganas, had left behind a suicide note, saying he could not take the mental stress any more and that no one was responsible for his death. He was taken to hospital, where doctors listed him dead.
