Several policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Suri police station, were injured after miscreants hurled stones and bricks at a police team in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, prompting arrests and a heavy deployment of forces to restore order.
The incident took place in Kukhudihi village, where OC Shailendra Upadhyay was among those injured during the attack. According to police, tensions flared after an earthmover engaged in construction work near a graveyard accidentally dug into soil covering a grave.
The situation escalated when the earthmover operator was detained by a section of locals, triggering a confrontation between two groups from the same community. Police personnel who initially reached the spot attempted to pacify the crowd and secure the driver’s release, but came under attack as the mob began pelting stones and bricks, injuring several officers.
Senior officials, including SP Surya Pratap Yadav, rushed to the village with additional forces to bring the situation under control.
"Fourteen persons have been arrested so far. Raids are underway and all those involved will be apprehended," Yadav said.
"Both groups involved in the clash belong to the same community," the SP added.
Police said the situation is now under control, with forces continuing to remain deployed in the area as a precaution. Further investigation is underway.
