“There were no injury marks on the body,” an officer at Parnasree police station said. “She was found dressed for school.... We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of her death.”

Mukherjee, a geography teacher in the middle and senior sections of the AJC Bose Road school for 18 years, was declared dead on arrival at Vidyasagar State General Hospital on Wednesday evening.

Officers, after a preliminary investigation, are not suspecting any foul play. No complaint has yet been lodged.

Officers said Mukherjee had been living alone since her mother had been hospitalised.

The teacher had attended school on Tuesday. Her Facebook profile was active till Tuesday evening.

“She was a strict and sincere teacher. At the same time, she was extremely enthusiastic about the school’s cultural events,” Terence Ireland, principal of St James’ School, said on Thursday.

A prayer service will be held at the school.

A school official recounted how Mukherjee would love to participate in one-act plays and musicals.
