Kurseong, Nov. 15: As Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters burned copies of the memorandum of settlement here, lawyers from different parties except for the GNLF explained to the people the meaning of the Sixth Schedule.

“The Sixth Schedule which the GNLF has been talking about in the hills has been interpreted wrongly. The special status is meant to uplift the condition of tribal people who lived in jungles at the time when the Constitution was framed,” said I.K. Sharma, a CPRM central committee member and a senior lawyer.

“Are we living in the jungles? The Darjeeling hills is an ethno-museum, meaning people of all communities live together. In such a condition, if the Sixth Schedule is implemented, people living here will be divided on communal lines,” he added.

The Morcha along with the CPRM and ABGL had brought out a rally before burning the copies of the memorandum of settlement.
