Gangtok, Nov. 19: The lone MP from Sikkim, Nakul Das Rai, has threatened to file defamation suits against both the state Congress and the Sikkim unit of the BJP for reportedly maligning his image and levelling allegations against him.

Rai was accused of embezzling money worth Rs 3 lakh, allotted for work carried out under the natural calamity fund in Assam Lingzey, the MP’s native village.

Incidentally, the work is being carried out by a contractor, Nakul Rai, who has the same name as that of the MP. Recently, state Congress president Nar Bahadur Bhandari alleged that the MP was the contractor of the project. The state BJP unit had also written to the Election Commission about this.

“There are as many as seven Nakul Rais in Assam Lingzey. All of them cannot be me. They should have verified the facts before levelling the allegations,” said the MP.

The vice-president of the Assam Lingzey gram panchayat, C.B. Rai, said, contractor Nakul Rai is the son of Jit Bahadur Rai. “But Nakul Das Rai (the MP)’s father is Asman Rai.”
