Resident of Krishnapur held with fake Rs 500 notes amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh

Malda’s Baishnabnagar police arrested one person with fake Indian currency notes (FICN) amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh on Saturday night.

Police sources said that Muslemin Sheikh, a resident of Krishnapur, was intercepted on a rural road and searched based on a tip-off. Fake currency notes in denominations of Rs 500, were recovered from him.

In the past one-and-a-half months, this is the fifth seizure of FICN in Malda district. Earlier, similar seizures were made from areas of Englishbazar and Kaliachak police stations.

Gambling arrest

Acting on a tip-off, a police team of Mekhliganj in Cooch Behar district raided a park in Mekhliganj town and arrested five persons allegedly for gambling on Saturday night.

Among those arrested — Tanmay Sutradhar, Ashikar Rahaman, Shyamal Barman, Sushanta Roy and Mrityunjoy Roy — three have political links.

Tanmay is the president of the BJP’s Yuva Morcha in Mekhliganj town, Mrityunjoy is a Trinamul member of the local panchayat samiti and Ashikar is the BJP president of Mekhliganj town committee, said sources.
