Parno Mittra, Swastika Mukherjee and Raima Sen in Aami Aar Amaar Girlfriends

Sixes at IPL-6 be damned, it’s raining films at cinemas this week and there’s something on the plex platter for every kind of film buff.

Action flick (Shootout at Wadala) to superhero saga (Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3), romance (Aashiqui 2) to drama (Bombay Talkies), zom com (Go Goa Gone) to children’s films (Chhota Bheem and Gippi), it’s an all-you-can-watch movie menu out there.

“This is a rare week when a film of almost every genre is playing. The crowd count has been very good with everyone from families to teens to young couples trooping in for their choice of film,” said an official of Fame Cinemas that has as many as 14 films on its roster.

Also rare is the fact that a Tollywood film has emerged as the giant killer at the box office. Aami Aar Amaar Girlfriends, a chick flick starring Raima Sen, Swastika Mukherjee and Parno Mittra, is drawing in the crowds, especially the young.

“Aami Aar Amaar Girlfriends has emerged as the surprise package of the week. Almost all shows are houseful,” said the Fame official. The Mainak Bhaumik film notched up footfalls in excess of 92 per cent at the plex’s South City property over the weekend.

“Girlfriends isn’t really for the family crowd. The film is getting the youth-based audience. Footfalls are good,” said Arijit Dutta of Piyali Films, the regional distributors of the film.

No wonder Mainak is wearing a smile to go with his satchel. “I saw the college crowd catching Aami Aar Amaar Girlfriends. They seemed to like it more than Maach Mishti & More, for obvious reasons!”

The reasons? As Anjan Dutt put it in his t2 review: “After many years, here is a film about women which is not at all ‘apologetic’.... This perhaps is the first Bong ‘flick’ and not the usual ‘film’.... A story that teases, flirts, disturbs, shocks but grabs your heart.”

Giving Girlfriends some Tolly support are three earlier releases — Aparna Sen’s Goynar Baksho, Kaushik Ganguly’s Shabdo and sleuth saga Arjun.

On the Bolly-Holly front, Aashiqui 2 remains a pop pick from the earlier releases followed by Iron Man 3 and Chhota Bheem, Bombay Talkies and Shootout at Wadala, in that order.

From the Friday crop, Saif Ali Khan’s wacky zombie comedy Go Goa Gone is ahead of the Karan Johar-produced Gippi, with weekend figures at the plexes in the range of 70 and 80 per cent. “The film made Rs 10 lakh on Friday, which was more than our expectations. The collection of the first three days has been Rs 40 lakh,” said Debashish De of Aum Moviez, the regional distributor of the film.

And then, of course, there is Star Trek Into Darkness, the latest film in the franchise that recreates the magic of the earlier films — in 3D — and throws Benedict ‘Sherlock’ Cumberbatch into the mad mix as the baddie.

“Fans have been walking in ever since the first show on Friday. The weekend had quite a few houseful shows,” revealed a plex spokesperson. “The occupancies were in the range of 45 per cent on Friday which is good for a Holly film. The weekend was extremely strong and we expect the film to go from strength to strength,” said a spokesperson for Shree Venkatesh Films, the film’s distributor.
