Bantra Public Library’s 45th Annual Table Tennis Championship was held from July 26 to 29 at the library. Apart from being the club’s annual championship, this was also the stage II state ranking tournament. Participants from Howrah, Hooghly, Calcutta and North and South 24-Paraganas played in the tournament. The competition was played in 12 age categories. Bantra Public Library’s table tennis tournament is one of the longest running championships in Howrah and is approved by the West Bengal Table Tennis Association (WBTTA) as a state ranking tournament. Although participants came from five districts, most of the prizes went to North 24-Paraganas. Rudra Narayan Ghosh from North 24-Parganas and Sucheta Prosad from Hooghly were winners in the nursery category. Rishav De from Hooghly and Munmun Kundu from North 24-Paraganas won in the cadet category. Jeet Chandra from south Calcutta won in both sub-junior and junior boys’ categories and Shrubabati Moitra from north Calcutta took the prize in the sub-junior category. Senior men’s winner was Anirban Ghosh while Sutirtha Mukherjee won in the senior women’s category. Both were from North 24-Parganas. Howrah did not win in any of the categories this year.

The final match of the inter-club football tournament organised by Salkia Durbadal was played on August 3 at Salkia Sammelan Park. Eight football teams from across Howrah had been playing knock-out matches for one month. The host club’s coaching camps, Salkia Durbadal Coaching Centre A and Salkia Durbadal Coaching Centre B reached the final. Coaching Centre A won the match 2-1. “Salkia Durbadal organises this football tournament every year. Although it is a tough fight every year between the clubs, this year, however, the other teams lost the tournament in the last stage. Only the host club’s teams qualified for the final,” said Amal Khanra, the secretary of Salkia Friends’ Club Football team, that had also taken part in the tournament.
