The gelled and spiky-haired London-based guru of Asian electronica, Talvin Singh, transformed into a turbaned, bearded and sword-carrying Punjabi groom on Sunday morning, twirling his handlebar moustache as he arrived at Gurdwara Jagat Sudhar on Rashbehari Avenue to marry Calcutta-born, Bangalore-based Jasmeen Patheja.
The private ceremony (picture top left) was organised by the bride’s family in Calcutta. Accompanying Talvin were his parents, three sisters, nephews, nieces and a few musician friends. Also spotted were ghazal singers Roopkumar Rathod and his wife Sonali (with the couple in picture left). Delhi-based Sufi singer Madan Gopal Singh, with whom Talvin is slated to perform in London next week, sang during the ceremony. The newly weds left the gurdwara in a pink Ambassador (picture bottom left).
Preceding the two-hour wedding ceremony was a mehendi and band, baaja, baraat on Saturday night for which the composer and tabla ace, who has collaborated with Madonna, Bjork and Massive Attack, had arrived on a horse.
At the post-wedding bash at The Tollygunge Club on Sunday evening, the Rathods and Madan Gopal Singh sang, London-based Samik Dutta played the sarod and Niladri Kumar the sitar.
