Gangtok, Sept. 22: The absence of a permission from authorities in Delhi prompted the first court at Alipur and the external affairs ministry to forbid Karmapa Orgyen Trinley Dorji from visiting the Karmapagon monastery at Chakrabaria Road.

The Karmapa who was on a three day visit to Calcutta on the invitation of the Mahabodhi society was denied the opportunity of a visit to Karmapagaon Monastery, second, in the list of properties, only to the Dharma Chakra Centre, Rumtek, the headquarters of the Karma Kagyu sect.

That the visit to the monastery was not in the Karmapa’s initial itinerary, came to the knowledge of the Karmapa Charitable Trust (KCT) which immediately filed a case in the court of the executive magistrate, first court, Alipur. The court gave the officer in charge of the Bhawanipur police station explicit orders to prevent anyone from entering the premises of the “case property” without the permission of law. Sources said section 144 was imposed on the property during the time of the visit of the Karmapa.

Sources close to the Karmapa, speaking to The Telegraph said: “Though it (Karmapagon monastery) did not feature in his scheduled list of visits, we were very keen on taking him there. But that was not meant to be as we could not get necessary permission from the external affairs ministry. The state home ministry has no authority to issue orders, which meant we had to get the nod all the way from New Delhi and we did not have such a lot of time on our hands.”

The visiting Karmapa came as a “guest” of the external affairs ministry , which led to all his activities being controlled by them. All his visits had been scanned by officials in advance and they “left no berth for changes.”

The Karmapa who is presently residing at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh has his actual seat at Rumtek. He, however, has been disallowed the right to enter the state and occupy his throne.

Speaking to reportersin Calcutta during his visit, he spoke of his desire to go back to his home state. He said he hoped the Centre would remove the hurdles that stand in the way of his return. He was optimistic he would be in Rumtek in “two years time” because the people of Sikkim wanted him to be there.

During his stay the Karmapa kept time aside for followers from Sikkim who had come to meet him He also blessed the Sikkimese students from various colleges who had called on him during his visit.
