Mamata Banerjee on Thursday lambasted the BJP-led Centre for frequently sending teams of officials to Bengal to look into purportedly trivial matters.

The Bengal chief minister’s latest tirade against the Centre was prompted by the Union rural development ministry’s decision to send two teams to the state to look into the modalities of the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

“For political reasons, the Centre keeps sending A-Team, B-Team, C-Team, A-Z Team. Even if a firework goes off, they will send a team to probe the matter,” she said at Gangasagar.

The two central teams are in the process of visiting districts in south and north Bengal and preparing reports to be submitted to the ministry on the implementation of the rural housing scheme. Their visits assume significance amid complaints that the process to verify the eligibility of 11.36 lakh PMAY applicants being carried out by the state government has been faulty.

“In the PMAY, we have set up an inquiry after receiving complaints and 17 lakh names have been removed from the list by us. In fact, in the past one month, we built 11 lakh houses. This is because the funds from the Centre arrived late. Then too, not the entire amount was sanctioned,” said the chief minister.

She was referring to the Centre’s sanction of Rs 8,200 crore to construct 11 lakh homes.
