‘HOWRAH BRIDGE’ IN PATULI: A replica of the Howrah bridge, built for decoration, over a water body along the Bypass in Patuli. The replica was built using 12 tonnes of iron that was used to make the Durga Puja pandal of Naktala Udayan Sangha in 2016. The replica was completed in July 2017. Bappaditya Dasgupta, the councillor of Ward 101, who took the initiative to build the replica, said there were three water bodies that he wanted to beautify. “We didn’t want to waste the iron used for our pandal. Pulak Bhattacharya, one of the puja committee members, fabricated the scrap iron in his factory for the replica,” said Dasgupta, who is also the general secretary of the puja committee. Pedestrians or vehicles are not allowed on the bridge. The civic body has installed lights inside the Howrah bridge replica. “We have built walkways around the three water bodies and made seating arrangements,” said Dasgupta. The councillor plans to build a replica of Vidyasagar Setu over a water body. (Sanjoy Chattopadhyaya)
