Siliguri, Nov. 16: The Left formed the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad board today and Tapas Sarkar, a CPM member from Matigara, was elected uncontested as the sabhadhipati.
Around 12noon, Pushpendu Mitra, additional district magistrate (development), Darjeeling, administered the oath to all nine SMP members.
Before the process to announce the board started, Trinamul members Ainul Haque, Kajal Ghosh and Sharmistha Chanda (Roy) walked out.
"We don't want to be part of the proceedings where the Left will form the board as they have won by unethically allying with the Congress, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, KPP and others. Even then, we got three seats," Ghosh said referring to the informal coming together of rival parties at the lower SMP tiers. "If they fail to carry out development work in Siliguri subdivision, there will be an extensive movement."
The Left has won six seats at the nine-member SMP.
Sarkar named Tapasi Roy of the Forward Bloc as the sahakari sabhadhipati. "We expect complete co-operation from all members, the state and the central government," he said.
CPM state secretariat member Asok Bhattacharya said: "Trinamul should not speak of ethics because during previous SMP board, the leaders had bribed members of other parties to gain control."
