Kalyani, Feb. 19: Police have arrested the wife of a retired Kalyani University employee who was seen beating up the estate officer on TV channels and three others associated with the varsity for the ruckus on Tuesday.

The woman was identified as Jamuna Dinda, 53, who claimed she was a Trinamul Congress worker. She was arrested from the quarters of the varsity. Jamuna's husband was a peon who retired in September last year.

Arup Mukherjee, the president of the Kalyani Town Trinamul Congress committee, said Jamuna was not a party worker.

The three others were arrested this morning from university quarters that they are occupying illegally. They were identified as Shefali Mandal, 55, Harasit Barui, 46, and Kishore Bansfor, 48.

A police officer said that of the four arrested, Kishore was named in the FIR but the three others were arrested on the basis of the investigation.

Police sources said Shefali was a cook at Kalyani University while Kishore was a lab attendant.

Harasit is a casual worker. The trio are members of the university unit of the Trinamul Siksha Bandhu Samiti, an organisation of non-teaching employees. They were present in the university when education minister Partha Chatterjee visited it yesterday.

The four arrested persons were produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Kalyani and remanded in four days' police custody.

An officer said the accused had been charged with Sections 141 (unlawful assembly with criminal trespass), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a government servant to discharge duties), 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The arrests were made within 12 hours of the complaint lodged by the university. Kalyani University's FIR named 10 persons.

Education minister Chatterjee had asked Kalyani subdivisional police officer Rana Mukherjee to take action against the accused persons.

However, the prime accused, lab attendant Anjan Dutta, who is also the president of the varsity unit of the Trinamul Siksha Bandhu Samiti, could not be traced today. He was present at the varsity during the education minister's visit yesterday.

Bikash Acharjee, another Trinamul Siksha Bandhu Samiti leader who has been named in the FIR, has also been shown as absconding in police records.

The Nadia superintendent of police, Arnab Ghosh, said: 'We have started an investigation after receiving the complaint. Some of the accused are absconding. We are hopeful of arresting them soon.'

Around 20 police personnel have been deployed at the university to maintain peace.

Vice-chancellor Rattanlal Hangloo said he today sent a report to governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, the chancellor, on Tuesday's incident and the subsequent developments.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said she did not support the attack on varsity officials and the gherao of the VC on Tuesday.
