An elderly resident of Kasba has lost 1.72 crore in an investment fraud, police said.

Jayanta Ghosh, a resident of BB Chatterjee Road in Kasba, was lured into the online fraud by two persons whom he met online.

The duo misled Ghosh into transferring his money to a scam account, persuading him that he was investing in the securities market based in the United States.

They contacted Ghosh on January 26 and ensured that he made the investments by February 6, said an officer.

Ghosh invested 1.72 crore in total but did not get any returns, as promised.

Ghosh’s daughter lodged a complaint, and a case was registered with Kasba police station on Wednesday.

No one was arrested till Thursday evening. Police said a probe was on.

"It is vital to remember that if an offer appears overly beneficial, it is most likely fraudulent. Con artists manipulate human psychology, leveraging the greed for money and the fear of being arrested to trick individuals. Older adults are the most at risk for these kinds of fraud," commented a senior officer from Kolkata Police.
