IPS officers benched

The state government today put on compulsory waiting two IPS officers and changed the assignments of 10 other senior cops through a fresh round of transfers.

Calcutta, June 1: The state government today put on compulsory waiting two IPS officers and changed the assignments of 10 other senior cops through a fresh round of transfers.

The decision to send two officers on compulsory waiting stands out because of the seniority of one and the controversy the other had got embroiled in during polling in Calcutta on April 21.

Debasish Boral, one of the officers put on compulsory waiting, was the joint commissioner (crime) of Calcutta police.

An officer of a similar post had not been put on compulsory waiting in the recent past, sources said. While on wait, the officer has little to do other than reporting to the personnel and administrative affairs department.

The other officer - Nagendra Nath Tripathi, deputy commissioner of police (II) in the detective department - had allegedly slapped the owner of the landmark sweet shop Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy for keeping the establishment open during voting on April 21.

After the elections were over, Tripathi had apologised to the proprietor of Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy at Lalbazar, according to government sources.

Since the Trinamul government began its second stint, five IPS officer posted in Calcutta have been put on compulsory waiting.

On May 25, the government had sent on compulsory waiting three IPS officers.

Today, the postings of 10 other IPS officers were changed. P. Nirajnayan, who was the additional director-general (ADG) of police, administration, was made the director of civil defence. According to the sources, the new assignment is considered a less high-profile post. Sudhir Mishra, the ADG of the state crime records bureau, will replace him.

M.K. Singh, the ADG railways, was made the ADG provisioning. Adhir Sharma, the ADG telecom, replaced Singh.

Neeloo Sherpa, who was the SP of the anti-corruption branch, moves to the detective department (II) as deputy commissioner.

Gangeswar Singh, who was the director of civil defence, is the new ADG of the intelligence branch.
