Garage blast injures five

The carbide tank exploded in a car garage at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri on Wednesday morning

Five persons were injured when a carbide tank exploded in a car garage at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri on Wednesday morning. Four of the injured have been admitted to the super-specialty hospital.

Police officers have visited the spot and started a probe. Sources said some mechanics in the garage of Bapi Nandi were using carbide gas for welding works when the tank suddenly exploded.

The mechanics, Nandi; and a couple of others who were standing at a food stall nearby were injured. Local people took the injured to the nearby rural hospital. Later, four were shifted to Jalpaiguri. The police collected samples of the tank. A case has been registered at Dhupguri police station. The samples would be sent for forensic tests, police sources said. In another incident, a person died and two were injured when two trucks collided head-on in the Thakurpat area of Dhupguri on Wednesday afternoon.

Sources said an empty truck that was heading towards Dhupguri town overtook another vehicle but rammed into a second truck that was loaded with eggs and coming from the opposite direction.Md. Gulfan (35), the driver of the empty truck, died on the spot. He was a resident of New Jalpaiguri.

The driver and the cleaner of the other truck suffered injuries. Traffic came to a halt on the route for some time after the accident. Police reached the spot and cleared the road. Both the trucks have been seized.

Trader found dead

Mansur Ali, a 21-year-old trader, was found dead beside SH16 at Beltala in Mathabhangapolice station limits in Cooch Behar on Wednesday morning. He was a resident of Sitalkuchi.
