New Alipore: A fire broke out in a flat in a building under construction at New Alipore that was used as a godown on Thursday afternoon.

Four fire engines were used to douse the flames in an hour. There were no injuries.

The fire in the first-floor flat of Ideal Exotica residential complex in Block P of New Alipore was first spotted at noon. Sparks flying off a weld triggered the fire, a fire officer said.

"The flat was used to store plywood, thinners and paints. All these are highly inflammable. That's why the fire spread quickly and it took time to bring it under control," the fire officer said.

The housing complex, spread over 3.8 acres, has five 22-storey towers. The fire broke out in a flat in the fifth tower. Flames leapt out of the window and balcony and the two floors above were covered in soot. But the fire did not spread.

The fire was brought under control around 1pm and doused completely by 1.30pm.
