A girl fills up the first-year admission form at Asutosh College on Monday. Sources in the education department said more than a lakh students would vie for the 90,000-odd seats in 130 colleges across the city. Most colleges started distributing and accepting application forms on Monday. Admissions will start from June 21 and classes are to begin around July 7. Several principals said students who had passed the Higher Secondary exams would find it difficult to secure berths in good colleges as there were far greater number of high-scorers from the ISC and CBSE plus-II streams. “With so many students with high marks from other boards, we are not even being able to consider HS students who have scored 80-85 per cent,” said Anjan Sengupta, the general secretary of the All Bengal Principals’ Council. The HS council has alerted Calcutta University and the West Bengal Council of Higher Education about the problem being faced by its students. (Sanat Kr. Sinha) |
