Oct. 10: Calcutta University has alerted Raj Bhavan that it has initiated the process for appointment of a full-term registrar.
Till such time as the full-term registrar is appointed, the university has appealed to governor and chancellor Keshari Nath Tripathi for extension of the interim registrar's tenure, which ends on October 16.
Interim registrar Rajagopal Dhar Chakraborti, who succeeded another interim registrar Soma Bandyopadhyay, had joined the university on April 15.
Vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee today wrote to governor Tripathi, who is also the chancellor, requesting a six-month extension of Dhar Chakraborti's tenure.
"We have communicated to Raj Bhavan, seeking an extension of six months. In the letter, the university has apprised the governor about the process the university has initiated to appoint a full-term registrar. As the appointment of a full-term registrar would take time, we have sought that the tenure of the present interim registrar be extended," said VC Chakravarti Banerjee.
A university official said the university's convocation would be held in early January after a gap of two years. The registrar's office plays a crucial role in conducting the ceremony.
The university earlier received a rap from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for having interim appointees in key posts such as registrar.
The agency had mentioned in its report that the lack of full-term appointees was partly responsible for the slight fall in score, a university official said.
The registrar's post fell vacant when the then registrar, Basab Chaudhuri, sought two years' lien from the university after being appointed interim VC of West Bengal State University in September 2015.
Auditorium repair
Calcutta University will start the repair of the Centenary Auditorium after October 16, when a meeting of college principals and higher education department officials is scheduled to be held.
