Over 100 family members of stranded migrant labourers from East Midnapore’s Nandigram on Saturday morning gheraoed the residence of Congress leaders Milan and Sabuj Pradhan pressing them to follow up on Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s pledge earlier this week that her party would arrange for the journey home of migrant labourers stranded across the country.

Earlier this week, Gandhi had said her party would pay for the travel of migrant workers, if the state or central governments did not act soon.

Sources said the move was spurred by an electronic notification from the Bengal government earlier in the day stating that stranded residents of the state could avail of e-passes online provided they could arrange for their own transportation. Protesters, in addition to local Opposition leaders, on Saturday termed the circular “ridiculous”.
